Policies

  • Confidentiality of Treatment/Records
    • Student Health Service complies with the federal Health Insurance Portability and Accountbility Act (HIPAA) rules and regulations regarding the privacy and security of records. See the Medical Records section for the complete policy and Notice of Privacy.
  • Medical Withdrawal
    • Those desiring consideration for a medical withdrawal should contact the Vice President for Student Affairs. Documentation of treatment is required as part of the process. Medical withdrawal requests must be made during the semester in which the student is in attendance. Retroactive withdrawals will not be considered. Re-admission to the University will require documentation that the student is medically able to attend the university.
  • Separation for Psychological or Medical Reasons (Involuntary)
    • A student may be medically withdrawn from the University if, in the judgment of the University, the student is unable for medical reasons to benefit from the academic program, and/or cannot benefit from the available and limited therapeutic resources of the university; and/or if the student is threatening to self or to others; and/or was of disruptive concern to others. (See Student Handbook, Chapter 3 for complete policy.)
      • The student may seek consideration for re-admission by submitting a request, with appropriate documentation, to the Vice President for Student Affairs. The VPSA may convene the University Health Committee for advice regarding the re-admission request. The committee is chaired by the VPSA, with membership composed of the director of Counseling & Career Services, the medical director, and the charge nurse in Student Health Service.
  • Medical Waste Handling
    • Student Health Service contracts with a private medical waste removal company to pick up and properly dispose of all medical waste materials in the department. Student Health Service complies with OSHA and Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations that mandate all Regulated Medical Waste (RMW) be packaged properly to ensure that employees and the community are safe from potential exposure. All packaging is provided by the contracted company and is puncture-resistant, leak proof, and closeable. Marking and labeling requirements identify the waste by including "Regulated Medical Waste, and the Biohazard symbol". All shipping documents identify the material and provide emergency information for responders. All staff in the department who prepare containers for transport and/or sign the shipping documents have been trained by the company.
