APEX Youth Center
ABOUT THE AGENCY
The APEX Youth Center offers teens and young adults (ages 12-25) a safe atmosphere to play, learn, work, and dream. The Center provides "a space out of the path of the bullet" and empowers teens and young adults to choose nonviolent conflict resolution and build positive social relationships.
WHAT YOU DO
Loyola service learners will assist in providing supervision to youth at the center. Building healthy relationships with the kids is particularly important. It helps to be outgoing or be able to take the initiative in talking to the kids and joining in their activities. Activities include homework help, art, music, rap sessions, video games, dance, basketball, pool, air hockey, etc. Students interested in nonprofit work can also help with administrative tasks such as fundraising, data management, etc.
WHAT YOU LEARN
Students will learn how to interact constructively with children and teens, many of whom face a number of challenges (poverty, violence, educational inequities). Students will also learn what it's like to work at a nonprofit. It is important that all our volunteers learn how to model pro-social behavior and positive conflict resolution skills.
