Spring 2008 Closing Information
Deadlines:
- Graduating Seniors may checkout up until 2:00pm on Monday, May 12, 2008, and MUST submit a request to stay late using the Late Checkout and Interim Housing Request Form.
- Graduation Ceremony Participants may checkout up until 2:00pm on Saturday, May 10, 2008, and MUST submit a request to stay late using the Late Checkout and Interim Housing Request Form. Simply watching the Graduation Ceremony DOES NOT constitute participation.
- All other students must be checked out properly, through their RA no later than 24 hours after their last final. Students who fail to checkout prior to 10:00am on Saturday, May 10, 2008 will be charged an Improper Checkout fee of $100-$500, depending on the circumstances, and on top of possible $25/day housing fee. If a student does not fit one of the above categories and wishes to stay late (defined as after 10:00am on May 10, 2008), they must submit a request to stay late using the Late Checkout and Interim Housing Request Form. Even if a Late Checkout is granted, the student may still be charged a $25 housing fee for each day they request to stay, starting with the official checkout day (May 10, 2008 in most cases).
How to Properly Checkout:
In order to avoid an Improper Checkout, each resident must:
- Schedule a checkout time with their RA. Schedules will be posted on each RA door, and time slots will be filled on a first-come, first-serve basis. If you fail to sign up for a valid time, or are not ready to checkout at your scheduled time, you may be assessed an Improper Checkout Fee.
- Pack ALL of your personal belongings and move them out of the room, into your vehicle or storage unit.
- Clean your room from top to bottom. Make sure to sweep and mop, wipe down the furniture and walls, and report any problems to your RA immediately (before checkout if at all possible). Make sure to bag all of your trash and dispose of it properly. RAs will have extra trashbags if needed.
- Clean out your campus mailbox.
- Turn in all of your keys to your RA. Key replacement charges apply for any keys not returned at checkout.
- Turn in your Mail Forwarding Request. Please make sure we have you correct Summer address so you can get your mail. If your Summer address is the same as your permanent address on file with the University, you do not have to complete a Mail Forwarding Request. Your mail will automatically be forwarded to that address.
- Show up on time! RAs will be VERY busy with multiple checkouts. If you are late, you may get skipped and assessed an Improper Checkout Fee.
24 Hour Quiet Hours
Beginning Sunday, April 27, 2008 at 10:00pm, 24-Hour Quiet Hours will be in effect. Out of respect to those studying for final exams, please observe 24-Hour Quiet Hours throughout Finals Week.
Trash
Each RA will have trash bags available for residents to use. Bring all trash bags to the designated dumpsters, located outside of the residence halls. Ask an RA if you don't know where the closest dumpster is. The refuse rooms can not accommodate all of the trash, so they will be closed down during finals week and closing. Trash left in non-designated areas will be subject to fines for the area in which it is found.
Interim Housing
Students who have applied and been assigned summer housing and wish to stay on campus between Fall closing and Summer opening (a period of 2 weeks) may apply for Interim Housing. Interim housing costs $170 per week for a double occupancy room, in addition to the regular Summer Housing. Students who wish to request interim housing must complete the Late Checkout/ Interim Housing Request Form. Approved students may be required to move from their current room.
Mail Forwarding
The best way to get your mail forwarded in a timely manner is to change your address with everyone who might send you mail (family, friends, magazines, banks, etc). Also, Mail Forwarding Request forms will be available at the Front Desk of your residence hall by May 1. Please pick one up, fill it out, and turn in to your RA when or before you checkout from your room.
If your forwarding address is the same as your permanent address on file with The University, you DO NOT have to fill out a Mail Forwarding Request, your mail will be automatically forwarded.
MicroChiller
All students who rented a MicroChiller from SGA at the beginning of the year will need to completely defrost and clean their unit. All MicroChillers will need to be returned to SGA before checkout from the residence hall in order to avoid an Improper Checkout. The MicroChiller drop-off location will be determined and advertised as soon as possible. Fridges returned wet or dirty will be assessed additional cleaning fees through SGA. Residents who leave a MicroChiller in their room will be assessed an Improper Checkout Fee.
Safety Reminder
Move-out week is a time of high theft on most college campuses, due largely to book buy-back and people leaving cars and rooms unlocked. Please always lock your room and vehicle, and do not leave textbooks or other valuables unattended.
Off-Campus Storage Options
Residential Life doe snot provide summer storage for students. There are, however, several options available to students. Shipping companies such as FedEx, UPS and DHL offer options to ship large packages to anywhere in the world. There are also a number of storage companies in the area of campus that have full-summer deals, and will even help students transport their belongings to the storage area.
One company that Residential Life has worked with in the past is Secure Student Storage and Shipping. They have posted signs in the Residence Halls, and they will be on campus 9am-2pm and 3pm-7pm on May 7th, 8th and 9th to help students with their shipping and storage needs.
