Development of Social Thought

This course focuses on the original writings of four classical social theorists: Karl Marx, Emile Durkheim, Max Weber, and Georg Simmel. These four figures were largely responsible for shaping sociology as a distinctive enterprise, but their work also inspired broad movements in a number of other diciplines. In this regard, the writings we will examine in this course are potentially relevant also to those who do not intend to major in sociology but would like to become acquainted with the major developments in the intellectual history of modern Europe.
