Date and Time: Wednesday, October 1, 2008, 7-9 PM

Location: Nunemaker Hall Loyola University New Orleans

Format: Speaker followed by panel discussion and questions from the audience.

Moderator: Larry Lorenz

Topic: The Bishops' call for "a renewed kind of politics” that focus

  • more on moral principles than on the latest polls,
  • more on the needs of the weak than on benefits for the strong,
  • more on the pursuit of the common good than on the demands of narrow interests.

Keynote Speaker John Carr (U.S. Conference of Bishops)

Followed by a Panel of three discussants

  1. Cardinal Theodore McCarrick
  2. Loyola Law Dean Brian Bromberger
  3. Sr. Jamie Phelps, OP, Ph. D (Directs Xavier Black Catholic Studies Institute)

Some guiding questions for the discussion:

  1. Should the bishops speak out on political issues? Is it possible for the U.S. bishops to speak out on public policy without being partisan?
  2. What do you agree or disagree with in the bishops’ document “Faithful Citizenship”?
  3. Should Catholics as well as people of other faith traditions bring their faith into the political arena? How?
