  • Loyola University announces 2008 commencement speakers and honorary degree recipients

    Cathie Black, dubbed the “First Lady of American Magazines,” will address Loyola University New Orleans’ 2008 graduating class during commencement ceremonies. Legal-thriller bestseller and attorney Scott Turow will be the commencement speaker for Loyola’s College of Law.

    Commencement ceremonies are scheduled for Saturday, May 10, with the Unified Ceremony at 10 a.m., and the College of Law Ceremony at 5 p.m. Both ceremonies will take place in the Louisiana Superdome.

  • Pope Benedict XVI's visit to Washington D.C.

    I recently attended Pope Benedict XVI’s address to Catholic educators in Washington, D.C. in April. This address was one of the most highly anticipated speeches of his visit to the United States. While some domestic critics said he might chide Catholic educators for what they believe is a drift away from the faith, he spoke affectionately of the American church and praised its educators, showing appreciation for schools at every level for the role they play.  For all of us in Catholic education, there is an ongoing work of mission. He challenged us to keep working at it. We have to constantly ask ourselves how we can do it better. One great thing universities do for the church is that they are places where people can argue and try to understand. Part of what that does is to strengthen the church’s positions. As universities, we will always be places of argument and question. That is part of our nature. Read more.
