2009 Marquette Faculty Fellowship Program

To support scholarly and creative activities by Loyola University’s tenured and tenure-track faculty, the President and Provost announce the Marquette Faculty Fellowship Program.

Fellowship Information
All full-time, ordinary faculty in Loyola University's colleges, schools, and libraries are eligible to apply for the Marquette Faculty Fellowship. Up to five tenured faculty members will be named Marquette Faculty Fellows; up to five tenured-track faculty members will be named Marquette New Faculty Fellows. All fellows will receive stipends of $7,500 to support two months of full-time work on scholarly or creative projects during summer 2009. Fellows are eligible to receive an additional award of up to $500 to defray expenses related to the project. Fellows agree not to teach during the summer, perform administrative duties, or to receive compensation simultaneously for the same project from other funding sources. Fellows will occasionally meet with each other during the summer to discuss their projects.

The President and the Provost will select the Marquette Faculty Fellows upon the recommendation of the University Committee on Grants and Leaves. Alternates to that committee will be appointed for members who submit applications themselves. Recipients will be announced at the January convocation.

Selection Criteria
• Significance of the project. Marquette Fellowships should have the potential to significantly raise the scholarly profile of the University. The fellowship should contribute to the fellow’s body of research / scholarly work and to the larger profession.
• Quality of the design and description of the project. The application should clearly evidence the applicant’s command of the research methods, ideas, and literature and demonstrate how the proposed project fits within the current state of knowledge in their field.
• Promise that the project will lead to publication, exhibition, or performance. The proposal should have a specific final product that is appropriate to the disciplinary area.

Application
• Cover sheet stating the title of the project, the applicant’s name, a brief description of the project (100-125 words), and signatures of the department chair (as appropriate) and dean. The cover sheet is available on the Web site of the Office of Grants and Research (http://www.loyno.edu/ogr/marquettefellows2008.application.html).
• Project narrative that describes the project, including its significance and design, and plans for publication, performance, or exhibition (3 pages maximum). The narrative should be well-written for a general academic audience and be free of grammatical and typographical errors.
• Project timetable detailing the work to be performed during the two-month period (1 page maximum).
• Project budget (up to $500, optional) (1 page maximum).

All applications should be printed in Times or Times New Roman 12-point font, single-spaced with 1” margins.

Ten copies of the proposal along with ten copies of a current resume should be delivered to Kieone Cochran in the Office of the Vice Provost (Marquette Hall, Room 301). The deadline for receipt of the 2009 proposals is November 25, 2008.

Please direct questions about Marquette Faculty Fellowships to Laurie Phillips, Chair of the University Committee on Grants and Leaves, (X7833 or phillips@loyno.edu).

Final Reports
Fellows will submit a written report of work accomplished during the summer to the Office of Grants and Research by October 9, 2009.

The final report should include a copy or copies of the final product(s), as proposed in the application, or evidence of submission of the final product for peer review or acknowledgment of acceptance for publication / presentation / exhibition. If a project is incomplete at the time of the final report, then the report must provide an explanation and request an extension of a specified time period and indicate plans and timetable for completion.
