Caribbean Environmental Communications Initiative

A project funded by: United States Agency for International Development (USAID)
Granted to: University of New Orleans Foundation
Implemented by: Loyola University Center for Environmental Communications
In conjunction with: Panos Institute and Caribbean Environmental Reporters Network (CERN)

The states of the Eastern Caribbean are at a critical juncture in their progression from economies that were resource-based to those that are largely tourism-dependent. After more than three decades of outstanding growth in foreign exchange revenues from tourism, it is clear that the prospects for this source of growth, as well as others, are increasingly threatened by the loss of the pristine environment that attracts tourists to the region in such numbers. The paradox is that tourism is an important contributor to the environmental degredation, at the same time that it stands to be an early and significant victim of that process.
