Governance

The Director of the Institute is appointed by the vice president for academic affairs with approval by the president from one or more tenured members of the ordinary faculty proposed by the dean of the College of Arts and Sciences after consultation with relevant academic departments and the advisory board. The director reports to the vice president for academic affairs. The term of the director will be three years, renewable by the vice president for academic affairs.

The director of the institute will receive a one-course reduction each semester and an annual stipend equal to that given for teaching one summer course. This compensation will be reviewed annually by the vice president for academic affairs. The director will also have appropriate administrative support.

The director administers the funds of the institute according to the policies established by the advisory board. It is the responsibility of the director to provide members of the advisory board with copies of grant applications in advance of advisory board meetings. The director will review these applications as a standing agenda item with the other members of the advisory board and receive their recommendations regarding the disposition of the applications. The director will award grants according to the consensus and priorities developed by the advisory board.

The Advisory Board of the Loyola Institute for the Study of Catholic Culture and Tradition will be responsible for recommending policy development and the annual budget. It will consist of six members chosen by the president from both local and national experts in the area of Catholic studies, including members of Loyola University’s ordinary faculty. Recommendations for membership will be solicited from the Catholic Studies Minor Policy Board, the Loyola Institute for Ministry, from the Loyola Institute for the Study of Catholic Culture and Tradition Advisory Board, and from faculty engaged in teaching courses in the area of Catholic culture and tradition. The terms of service of members will be staggered three-year terms, renewable by the president with the agreement of the director. The director of the institute is the seventh member of the advisory board and, ex officio, the chair of the advisory board. The advisory board will meet at least once each academic semester.

The advisory board in its activities and recommendations will follow and be in conformity with the Loyola Goals Statement, the Character and Commitment Statement, and other approved university documents including the Faculty Handbook.
