The Host City

The site of the program is Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, home to some of the largest industries, law firms, banks, and universities in Brazil. Future site of the 2014 World Cup and the 2016 Summer Olympic Games, Rio is currently at the epicenter of global interest. As the world famous Ciudad Maravillosa, "the marvelous city," Rio de Janeiro features over 50 miles of beach shoreline. Students will have the opportunity to visit some of Rio's most popular tourist attractions (including the Christ the Redeemer Statue and Sugar Loaf Mountain) as a group, and to individually explore the city's gorgeous beaches, world class museums, internationally revered sporting venues, and exotic local markets and cultural offerings.

Through a series of legal visits, students will have the opportunity to observe Brazil's complex legal system. Meetings with legal academics, practicing legal professionals, judges and clerks, and law students will allow program participants to satisfy inquiries raised during class discussions and to evaluate the similarities and differences between Brazil's legal system and that of the United States.

We hope this brief description of our program will persuade you to join us this summer in Brazil. We have tried to emphasize the unique features of our program including the structuring of organized visits not only to legal institutions but to important cultural sites in the host country, in addition to interchanges with members of the host country legal community. In this way, we offer a full cultural experience to our participants and not just a program of legal education in a foreign country.
