Wireless Network Connection for Loyola University Campus Access

The wireless network in the Loyola School of Law is an 802.11b network and Miller Hall is an 802.11g network, commonly called “WiFi.” The wireless network in the Pine Street Café, Monroe Library, Recreational Sports Center, outside "Quad" areas and Danna Center is an 802.11b/g network. You will need a wireless network card that supports the 802.11b or 802.11g wireless standard installed in your laptop. This pamphlet will only cover configuration of one 802.11b network card as an example. You will have to see your hardware’s documentation for specific procedures to configure your card.

Configure your card with Loyola’s ESSID. The ESSID is also referred to as ‘Network ID,’ ‘Network Name,’ or ‘SSID’ in some hardware documentation. The ESSID for Loyola’s wireless networks is “Loyola”. Please notice the capital “L”.

In Windows 98, go to the Start button and select Settings. Choose the Control Panel and double click the Network icon. Under the Configuration tab, double click the icon for your wireless network card. Click the Advanced tab for your card’s properties and select the ESSID. This may be called SSID or Network Name. Under Value type “Loyola” with a capital “L”. Click OK. Under the network Configuration tab, scroll down to the item that shows TCP/IP with an arrow “->” to your network card. Double click that item and make sure it is configured like the Windows 98 Ethernet setup in the appropriate section of “PPP / Ethernet Connection Instructions for Windows and Macintosh Computers” available from Client Services.

In Windows 2000 go to the Start button and select Settings. Chose Network and Dial-up Connections. Select your wireless connection from the list. Under the Connection Status window’s General tab, click Properties. Under the Connection’s Properties window, click on the Configure button at the top. Select the Advanced tab and select ESSID under the Property list. This may be called SSID or Network Name. Under Value type “Loyola” with a capital “L”. Click OK. Under connection’s Properties window, select Internet Protocol (TCP/IP). Double click that item and make sure it is configured as stated in the “Windows 2000 - Ethernet Setup” section of “PPP / Ethernet Connection Instructions for Windows and Macintosh Computers” available from Client Services.

In Windows XP go to the Start button and select Control Panel. Double click Network Connections. Right click on your wireless connection and select Properties from the list. Under the Connection’s Properties window, select the “Wireless Networks” tab. Under “Preferred networks,” click  “Add.” For Network Name, type “Loyola” with a capital “L”. Use the dropdown list to select “Open” for “Network Authentication” and “Disabled” for “Data Encryption.” Click OK. Click OK again. Right click on your wireless connection again and select Properties from the list. Click the General tab. Under the connection’s Properties window, select Internet Protocol (TCP/IP). Double click that item and make sure it is configured as stated in the “Windows XP Ethernet Setup” section of “PPP / Ethernet Connection Instructions for Windows and Macintosh Computers” available from Client Services.
