Introduction
This booklet contains the information that you will need in order to establish a PPP connection (using a modem) or an Ethernet connection (via direct connection) between your Macintosh computer and Loyola University’s Internet gateway. Back to top
What you will need:
A Macintosh computer running System 8.0 (or better) is recommended. Information Technology recommends that those wishing to use their Macintosh computers to connect to the Internet adhere to the following minimum requirements: Macintosh G3 a PowerPC processor running system 8.0 (or better) 128MB RAM (built in memory) 15 GB Hard Drive 56k (or better) data modem for a PPP connection, or an Ethernet port. Back to top
While it is possible to establish an Internet connection with less than the minimum requirements, this specification is recommended for healthier network performance.
How Can I find out if My Computer Meets the Minimum Requirements?
To see the amount of RAM your computer has, select About This Macintosh from under the Apple menu. A dialog box will appear to show your computer type and the amount of Built in Memory. The Total Memory is shown as well. However, these factors in Virtual Memory schemes and is not considered Real RAM.
To determine the hard drive size, open the hard drive icon. Under the View command, choose by icon the used and available sizes will be shown in the upper portion of the window. Add these numbers together to get the size of your hard drive. If the available amount is less than 20MB, you will not be able to install the software required to establish an Internet connection.
OK, I’m set Now What? If you are trying to use a modem, please go to the Dial Up Connections with a modem section of this booklet.
If you are trying use a direct connection (on campus), then please go to the Ethernet Connections on campus section of this booklet.
If you want to understand these terms before you go any further, then please go to the Terms section of this booklet. Back to top
Dial Up Connections with a modem
These instructions are for Macintosh and Power Macintosh computers. Please read the introduction regarding the minimum supported Macintosh computer configurations. In addition to these requirements, you will need to have a Loyola Internet Account. All newly arriving students are issued this information, which consists of a login name and a password. Contact IT’s Client Services if you have questions. OT/PPP (the software needed to connect) comes already installed on most current Macintosh computers
Under the apple, select control panel
1. Open the TCP/IP Control Panel.
2. Under "Connect via" select connect PPP.
3. Under "Configure" select Using PPP Server. All of the information will be supplied by the server, except for the name server in the search domain field. Type in "loyno.edu".
4. Close the TCP/IP control panel.
5. Open the modem control panel.
6. Select the port your modem is connected to.
7. Select the type of modem you have.
8. Close the modem control panel.
9. Go the the Remote Access control panel.
10 Click on the setup drop down arrow.
11. Select the registered user button
12. Type in your login name (the information that comes before the @loyno.edu in your address). Then type in your password.
13. Enter the phone number 822-9333. This will allow a connection speed of up to 56K.
14. Click on the connect button. It should dial in and connect to the Loyola Unversity system. Once connected you will need a web browser to access the Internet.
Ethernet Setup
Check Your Hardware for an Ethernet Connection on Campus
Check to see what type of Ethernet hardware your Macintosh requires. Most new Macintosh computers come with the Network Interface Card already builtin, so only a RJ4 cable is needed to connect to the wall jack. Some older Power Macs need a transceiver. The transceiver port will look like a small trapezoid shaped connector. Ethernet cables can be purchased from the bookstore located in the Danna Center.
The Physical Connection
Plug one end of your Ethernet cable into one of the RJ45 ports on your wall jack. It is very similar to a typical phone jack (RJ 11) except that the RJ45 module is wider. It should snap when you plug it in.
Next, plug the other end of the cable to the RJ45 port on the back of your computer. It should also make a small snap noise when you plug it in. These connectors should only be able to fit one way into the ports, so do not force it. It is possible to bend the pins located in the port.
If you have trouble with these connections, make sure you orient the cable so that the metal tabs at the end of the cable face the pins inside of the port.
If your computer is turned on, you should see a “link” light come on. It should be located on the back of the Ethernet card near the port you just plugged into. Some cards do not have a link light. If yours does not, then your physical connection is complete. If you have a link light, and it does not come on; make sure your computer is turned on. If it is turned on, remove the Ethernet cable and reinstall it making sure one end snaps into the port on the wall jack and the end snaps into the port on your Ethernet card. If your link light still fails to come on, call x2255 for assistance. Back to top
Configuring TCP/IP
1. Open the TCP/IP control panel.
2. Under the “connect via” setting choose Ethernet.
3. Under the configure setting choose Using DHCP Server.
4. If you are asked to give a DHCP Client ID, leave it blank.
5. The server will supply all of the information. You will have to type in loyno.edu in the search domain field.
6.Close the TCP/IP Control Panel. At the prompt, choose save. You may be asked to restart. Do so.
You’re configured to use the campus network. Just click on your web browser to get access to the Internet.
Go to “system preferences” in the dock. Click on “Network”. Note: At the bottom left comer of the window is a button to unlock the network settings. You must do this in order to make changes.

Connecting via Ethernet
“Location” should be set to “Automatic” in the dropdown pane.
Select Builtin Ethernet in the “Show” dropdown pane. Beneath the Location and Show area is a bar that reads:
TCP/IP I PPPoE I AppleTalk I Proxies I Ethernet
Click to highlight TCP/IP
In the section “Configure IPv4”: make sure “Using DHCP” is selected in the dropdown pane. There is no need to input any information in the DNS Servers and Search Domain areas of this screen. Click the lock on the bottom left to prevent changes and quit System Preferences. Click “Apply” when asked.
Connecting via Dialup
Follow the steps stated above to get to “System Preferences’ . Location dropdown pane should read “Automatic”. In the “Show” dropdown pane choose ‘Internal Modem”.
Beneath the Location and Show area is a bar that reads:

Click on PPP to highlight.
When PPP is chosen you are presented with five (5) input boxes: Service Provider, Account Name, Password, Telephone Number and Alternate Number.
NOTE: The Service Provider and Alternate Number are both optional; however Loyola does not have an alternate dialup number, therefore these boxes can be left blank.
Under Account Name type your “user name”. Your user name is your email address before the @loyno.edu.
Under Password type the password given to you when your account was created.
There is a “Save Password” check box. Checking this will allow any user of this computer to access your account without entering a password. If you’re the only one that will use this computer, then check it for convenience, otherwise leave blank so it will prompt you for your password when a connection is made.
Below the password checkbox is a “PPP Options” button, This is basically a preference setup on how you want your connection to behave. These are personal choices; therefore they will not be discussed in this manual.
Click the “Apply Now” button at the bottom right of screen. When a connection is made you must open the browser of your choice, i.e., Internet Explorer, Netscape or Apple’s browser Safari. Back to top
