Daylight Savings Time Changes in 2007 and how it will affect your Windows computer

Are you 2007 DST Ready?

Beginning in 2007, daylight saving time (DST) will be extended in the United States. DST will start on March 11, 2007, which is three weeks earlier than usual, and it will end on November 4, 2007, which is one week later than usual. This results in a new DST period that is four weeks longer than in previous years. Unless certain updates are applied to your computer, the time zone settings for your computer's system clock may be incorrect during this four-week period. In particular, Information Technology advises you to verify your Windows operating system is updated and your calendar programs verified.

All Windows Users:

Microsoft has released a 2007 DST update for Windows 2000, Windows XP and Windows Vista.  An update is not available for earlier version of Windows.  Your computer may have already been updated if it is configured to install updates automatically.  To determine if the 2007 DST update has already been installed follow these steps:

  1. From you Start menu, choose Control Panel
  2. Double-click Add or Remove Programs
  3. At the top of the dialog box, make sure there is a checkmark by Show updates
  4. Scroll through the list of currently installed programs and updates
  5. Under Windows Software Updates, look for KB931836 (install date should be some time in February, 2007)

If KB931836 is listed, the Windows update has been applied and no further actions is required to make your Windows operating system 2007 DST ready. However, the update will cause appointment times scheduled in your calendar, during the extended DST (3/11/2007-4/1/2007 and 10/28/2007-11/4/2007), to be altered by one hour.  If you use a calendar, you will need to manually verify and change appointment times scheduled during the extended DST period back to their original times in your calandar.

If KB931836 is NOT listed, the link below will direct you to Microsoft’s website which will guide you through the installation of the 2007 DST update. Before applying the update Information Technology advises calendar users to print your calandar before applying the update.  This will provide you a reference to use if you need to change appointment times manually.

Once you have completed the installation of the Windows 2007 DST update, you will need to go to your calendar program to verify appointment times that you had scheduled during the extended DST times of 3/11/2007-4/1/2007 and 10/28/2007-11/4/2007.  Appointment times previously scheduled before the update will be adjusted by one hour.  You will need to manually adjust the times back to the correct time.

NOTE:  The update changes the appointment times during the extended DST only.  Appointments outside the extended time period are not affected.
