B. Goals

             1. a) Brief historical, cultural & literary introduction to the NT as an anthology of ancient,
                       religious, literary works which Christians accept as canonical or normative for their

beliefs: i.e. examination of the nature of the NT collection of books and its Greco-Roman

and Jewish background.  Stress will be on literary methods and historical background of

                      NT works.  b) Study of the Synoptic gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke) and the Acts of the

                      Apostles (by same author as Luke). Particular attention will be given to the distinctive

                      character of each work or author and the contribution each makes to early Christian

                      tradition about the Founder as Holy Man.

            2. Introduction to Christianity's great thinker Paul; study of his 7 authentic letters and of the
                       writings of disciples who wrote in his name.

             3. a) Study of the Gospel of John and other Johannine documents (l-2-3 John: works written by
                      the same community that produced the gospel); b) study of the general or catholic

                     epistles & pastoral documents of the NT written in the later years of the first century;

                     and c) analysis of the Book of Revelation.   d) There will be concluding remarks on NT

                      interpretation.

           4. Overall Goal: "ability to read & interpret religious (biblical) texts" (see Department Goals:

II. A-DÛfor text see http://loyno.edu/~richard/ntaslit/syn.html )
