Some Notes About Hibiscus on the WEB
There are many excellent "hibiscus" sites on the web. Some deal directly with hibiscus rosa-sinensis (tropical hibiscus) while others discuss its near relatives. But no matter what the particular variety, all hibiscus are subject to the same principles of good cultivation.
For those who need or enjoy reviewing the basics, I have included some links to a few WEBSITES that offer general, but nonetheless essential information on plant care and cultivation.
More advanced gardeners may choose to focus their attention on those sites treating exclusively with hibiscus. The websites sponsored by the American Hibiscus Society are among the most authoritative. But be warned, one should not be surprised that occasionally different authors offer different insights and even somewhat conflicting recommendations.
This is due to the fact that definitions of a "good porous mix", and "watering well" often differ from individual to individual. Moreover, there is a good deal of variability within the hibiscus family -- some flourish in swamps and some in the desert.
Even within rosa-sinensis, cultivars do vary (even if only marginally) in their tolerance and preferences for fertilizer, water, sun, etc. Moreover, one must take into account the plant's location, time of the year, temperature variances and especially whether the plant is growing in the ground or in a container.
Webpages give good basic information, but "tweeking" one's particular gardening practices might require more than "following the recipe." Thus, should you encounter difficulties or have questions that are not answered to your satisfaction on the WEB, we recommend contacting a local chapter of the AHS. There is nothing so profitable as a heart-to-heart with people who raise hibiscus successfully.
