After the tour and sale, we will have lunch with the Duponts at the nursery. Bootsie Dupont suggested that if anyone feels the compulsion to bring a dessert, she would be delighted to add it to the offerings. Otherwise, the rest of the meal will be handled from that end. We are still discussing the menu, but as always it will be worth the trip alone. Please let Sandra Barr (455-4512) know if you are planning to attend the lunch so that we can make the necessary food arrangements. PRICES: $12.00 for the 7.25-inch pots and $20 for the larger 10-inch pots. Mr. Dupont will help you select the 10-inch varieties, since he has some plants that he does not wish to sell at the moment. Sandra Barr, Wally Barr and I will be handling the money for Mr. Dupont, since he finds it too overwhelming to help select plants and to handle money at the same time. CASH OR CHECKS ONLY.
HOPE TO SEE YOU ALL THERE!! |
Plaquemine, La.
The Dupont Wholesale Greenhouses are located outside of town, but they are not difficult to find. First, one needs to get to Plaquemine. There are several possible routes. Perhaps the easiest is simply to take I-10 west to Baton Rouge, cross the Mississippi River bridge and take the exit on the right immediately upon descending from the bridge. The exit is well marked. Proceed into Plaquemine on LA 1, cross the little bridge over the bayou and continue on through town. At the junction of Hwy 1 and Hwy 75 which is the same as Bellevue Dr., take a right onto Hwy 75. Continue across the railroad tracks and proceed for approximately 7 miles.
The road will end at a junction with a stop sign (although there are some traffic lights, it is the only stop sign on the road). At the stop sign, you will notice the bayou directly in front of you and an abandoned store/bar (Jack Miller's) to your right. Turn to your left and proceed for approximately 1.25 miles. On your left you will see a sign: DUPONT NURSERY HOME OF CAJUN COLOR. Turn left into the gravel road and proceed down it. The road leads directly to the nursery greenhouses. Turn right on the road running next to the greenhouses and proceed to the main parking lot. We'll meet there.
Another possible route would be to take Hwy 70 to Donaldsonville and then follow Hwy 1 to White Castle and Plaquemine. Driving time from New Orleans is approximately one hour and forty minutes. My cell phone number is (504) 722-2408.
